BORDER CROSSING INFO

For convenience and ease of crossing, I recommend we cross the border with everyone in the SAG vehicle and all bicycles on the carrier.

We'll be crossing the border into Canada on US 11/CAN 223 (around mile 41.9 on our plan, DHS SAG). Meet at the Vinumport Duty Free Store and all get into the van for crossing the border.  Each person should have FORM 4457 ready along with passport.

We'll be crossing the border into US on CAN/US 225 (around mile 11.8 on our plan, BED SAG). Meet in the driveway of the home on the left side of the road just before the border and all get into the van for crossing the border have FORM 4457 from previous crossing ready along with passport and GOES card (if you have one).

Tips for Crossing the Canadian/US border by Bicycle

See discussion on personal items.

When entering the US, everyone is required to declare the value of all items purchased in Canada using US Customs Form 6059B (may be downloaded [can't be viewed in browser], filled in, and printed in advance of crossing border).  Each person is entitled to a $800 duty-free exemption.  Prior to entering Canada Form 4457 should be used for expensive items only with serial numbers, such as bikes, cameras, cell phones, computers. Have the form stamped at the border. Customs may randomly choose to search the vehicle (rarely done) and require proof of prior ownership on expensive items.

The issue is -- each person must carry or be with his luggage when crossing the border and submit forms 6059B and 4457.  With six bicyclists we may have to hand them their luggage prior to the border since the SAG vehicle can't carry six bicycles.

MEDICAL INSURANCE INFO

Medicare and Medicare advantage plans aren't covered in Canada.  Most Medigap plans provide coverage (80% of billed expenses up to a lifetime max of $50,000).  But none provide Medevac, which can be extremely expensive.

I have used brokerage services of Square Mouth for all my past travels.

CASH INFO

The best payment method is the Credit Card.  It will be accepted almost everywhere except for small businesses not setup to deal with tourists.  For small amounts of cash the best approach is for one of use who has an ATM card to act as banker for the group.

Scotia Bank is the International Partner of Bank of America.  The first time we will pass a Scotia Bank is in Saint-jean-sur-richelieu.  Use it to avoid international fee at an ATM.
